mere.dev / axial flux motors
Axial flux topology delivers higher torque density and better thermal performance than conventional radial designs, in a form factor that fits applications where a standard motor simply won't. I design and prototype custom axial flux motors \for applications where weight, efficiency, and power density actually matter.
Let's TalkWhy Axial Flux
Conventional radial flux motors have the rotor surrounding the stator, the flux path travels radially through the air gap. Axial flux motors stack the rotor and stator face-to-face, flux travels axially, parallel to the shaft. The consequence is a fundamentally different form factor: short and wide instead of long and round.
That geometry enables higher torque-to-weight ratios, better thermal paths through the stator, and direct-drive designs that eliminate gearbox weight and losses. For applications constrained by axial length, wheel hubs, aerospace, robotics, light vehicles , radial motors are fighting their own topology. Axial flux isn't.
The best motor for the job is the one whose topology fits the constraint, not the one that's easiest to source.
What I Do
Electromagnetic Design
Pole count, winding configuration, air gap geometry, and magnet layout, designed to the torque, speed, and efficiency targets of your application. I use FEA to validate before cutting metal.
Mechanical Design
Rotor and stator structures, bearing selection, thermal management, and enclosure design. Axial flux motors have specific mechanical challenges, particularly in handling axial magnetic forces, and I design for them from the start.
Drive Electronics
A motor is only as good as its drive. I design the power electronics and control firmware to match the motor , FOC, BLDC, or custom control strategies depending on the application.
Prototype Fabrication
From design to a working prototype. I machine rotor and stator components, wind stators, and build up working assemblies for testing and iteration.
